- Lara & Tiffany Trump’s X accounts fall victim to a fake meme coin hack.
- Donald Trump’s son, Eric, chimes in to issue a warning message.
- The World Liberty token gets endorsed by a popular social influencer.
This year, crypto hacks promoting counterfeit tokens have become a dangerous trend on X. Usually targeting celebrities, such as musicians, athletes, and politicians, these scams capitalize on people aping into counterfeit coins presented to them by the hackers posing as the victimized celebrity.
In a wild turn of events, cybercriminals took over Tiffany and Lara Trump’s X accounts on September 3, 2024. The compromised accounts shared messages about Donald Trump’s new decentralized finance venture, World Liberty Financial.
However, this so-called World Liberty token was a counterfeit meme coin launched on Solana (SOL). In a now-deleted tweet on Lara Trump’s account, the fake token’s smart contract address was shared as one of the “only official channels” related to World Liberty. “I believe my father and brother are carrying out the long-needed, important works needed to decentralize the financial world,” reads the erased message.
Trump Family Members Weigh in to Warn Fans
After numerous tweets from Lara Trump’s account, the hackers endorsed the fake $WL token through Tiffany’s X account. Tiffany’s messages supported Lara’s announcement in a sly attempt to create legitimacy for the counterfeit meme coin.
Hours later, Lara Trump’s husband, Eric Trump, warned his X audience that all these messages from Lara and Tiffany’s accounts were fake. Additionally, Eric praised X customer support for handling the issue in minutes and urged Trump fans not to fall for these tricks.
Unfortunately, the counterfeit $WL token on Solana garnered immediate attention from Trump family followers. Multiple crypto enthusiasts on X pointed this out. They confirmed that “people jumped on it right away,” especially after social influencer Caitlyn Jenner endorsed the fake $WL token to 3.3 million of her followers.
On the Flipside
- Some people believe it was an inside job, as Donald Trump’s official X account had previously shared the same website.
- Despite the smooth resolution of this issue by X’s team, it’s unknown how much damage was done during the incident.
Why This Matters
As celebrity hacks are on the rise, it’s important to understand the mechanics of these cyber crimes and the magnitude of responsibility for those affected.
