Solana has been facing scrutiny over its supposed centralization for years. These issues came back into focus recently, after recent criticism by digital privacy advocate Edward Snowden. On Wednesday, October 2, at the Token2049 conference in Singapore, he raised significant concerns with Solana.
Snowden argued that its focus on speed and low transaction costs compromises decentralization, making it vulnerable to control by authoritarian regimes. These comments prompted a discussion about how centralized and vulnerable Solana is.
Is Solana Centralized?
Snowden’s criticism ignited a debate over Solana’s centralization and vulnerability to outside entities. One Solana developer, Mert Mumtaz, challenged Snowden to identify the vulnerabilities. “Show me the vector you’re going to use with data to back it up,” he wrote.
While Mumtaz acknowledged that Solana may be less decentralized than Ethereum, he doubted its supposed vulnerability. He stated that Solana’s validators are distributed across multiple geographies, making it difficult for any government to control the network. However, many in the crypto community disagreed.
Critics highlighted the “high hardware and bandwidth requirements” for running Solana validators. “There’s not a single person I know who could run a validator at home. That’s the attack vector,” explained @phyrooo on X. Another developer highlighted that validators need at least $1.2 million in staked assets to break even on their operations.
Why Validator Concentration is a Concern
Operating a validator on Solana requires expensive hardware and robust internet, not accessible to the average user. This leads to a small number of validators dominating the network. What is worse, smaller validators depend on grants from the Solana Foundation, making centralization even worse.
The high degree of concentration exposes Solana to regulatory pressure from governments. Moreover, even if the validators manage to move their hardware to other geographies, ownership of staked SOL is also concentrated. One user, @Evan_ss6, pointed out just how much staked SOL is under the control of the founders and venture capital investors.
All of these issues point to the fact that Solana could be vulnerable to regulatory crackdowns. Just like in the case of Telegram, the arrest of its CEO prompted changes to the app’s policy. While Solana is not currently under the pressure of regulators to censor or reverse transactions, this is a risk going forward.
